Cenni Biografici
IMI KNOEBEL, è nato a Dessau, in Germania nel 1940.
Dal 1964 al 1971, ha studiato con Joseph Beuys alla Kunstakademie di Düsseldorf con i compagni studenti Blinky Palermo (con cui ha condiviso uno studio), Jörg Immendorff , Ivo Ringe e Katharina Sieverding.
Knoebel è noto per la sua pittura e scultura minimalista e astratta .Knoebel pur avendo studiato sotto Joseph Beuys, trasse influenza formativa dai principi del Bauhaus e da Kasimir Malevich nel suo coerente ritorno al quadrato, all’uso riduttivo del colore . Mentre i suoi primi pezzi erano in bianco e nero, come nella serie “Linienbildern” (Line Paintings) (1966-69), iniziò a esplorare colori vivaci e saturi nel 1974 con il suo amico e compagno di classe Blinky Palermo , a cui avrebbe dedicato ” 24 Farben für Blinky ”(“ 24 Colors for Blinky ”) (1977), una serie di forme irregolari dai colori vivaci. Knoebel lavorò anche alla proiezione come mezzo, sebbene durante queste esplorazioni mantenne la sua attenzione sulla piazza e sulla griglia come elementi centrali.
Imi Knoebel attualmente vive e lavora a Dusseldorf.
Principali esposizioni
La prima mostra di Knoebel, IMI + IMI, con Imi Giese, un compagno di studi di Beuys, si tenne a Copenaghen nel 1968.
Da quel momento, il suo curriculum annovera più di 1000 esposizione pubbliche nel mondo. Brevemente ricordiamo le sue opere in: Documenta Kassel 5 (1972), 6 (1977), 7 (1982) e 8 (1987); Sonsbeek71 (1971); Biennale di Parigi (1975); Biennale di San Paolo (1985).
Nel 1996 l’ Haus der Kunst , Monaco, organizzò una grande retrospettiva delle sue opere che furono esposte in una serie di mostre in tutta Europa, inclusi luoghi come lo Museo Stedelijk di Amsterdam e l’ Institut Valencià d’Art Modern , Centro Julio González, Valencia.
Knoebel fece una grande retrospettiva nell’estate 2009 alla Hamburger Bahnhof e alla Neue Nationalgalerie di Berlino.
